Always approach students with empathy. You never know what is going on outside of school or with friends. It's important to maintain expectations and hold students accountable, but there is usually more going on.
Never make a scene with a student. Pull them into the hallway for a private conversation. However, at the end of the day, everyone need to follow expectations. It's your job to uphold that.
